Windows 7 RC1 Windows XP Mode (Virtual PC)

Microsoft released their final beta version of Windows 7 (Build 7100) on the 5th May 2009. With the new build there are new features. One of them being: Being run XP inside (for free). This is done in a virtual Computer. (Virtual PC). It is a free download from Microsoft and it allows Windows 7 users to install XP within Windows 7 for free. The screenshots explain it clearer.

There you can see there is a Windows 7 Window, and a Windows XP Window (running Firefox). This screenshot shows XP running inside Windows 7. It works exactly like a normal PC works. The internet, printing etc.

The programs you install on XP also show up on Windows 7. As shown below. I installed Firefox on the XP Virtual PC and it then shows up in Windows 7. If you click it, it runs Firefox within Windows XP (within 7).

The message when loading is this:

Shows Firefox is shown when you search it (in brackets it says it is installed on XP)

You can run XP full screen, which makes it seem like you are on an XP computer. This could be good for people who arn’t quite ready to change yet.

Here are the settings of the virtual computer:

How to install:

  • First of all you need to have installed Windows 7 on your computer.
  • Then you need to head to this site (here) to download the XP virtual PC.

  • Click the download links, and install.
  • Done!
