Twilight

Yeah, the rumours are true, I read twilight. Of course, I’m going to do what I’m best at, criticise it.

The character of Bella is possibly the worst character in well anything. She has to be the most miserable character in any book I’ve ever read, here’s just a few quotes from the book:

“It was nice to be alone, not to have a smile and look pleased”
“Forks was literally my own personal hell on earth”
“‘Ew.’ Snow. There went my good day”
“Clearly today was going to be nightmarish”
“I jumped up to look outside, and then groaned in horror”
“I’d never been more alone in my life”

That’s lovely Bella. And seriously Meyer, stop with the constant descriptions  of Edward and get on with the story. Twilight isn’t even a long book but it still manages to be full of, well, nothing. It’s a shame, when the story gets going (that’s about a third into the book) it’s actually quite good. Yet, the characters that were built up forever aren’t mentioned again (well until the very end), so why bother?

What’s happening Chris? How’s life? You don’t seem yourself?

Yeah I get it, I’ve not been myself. Well maybe I have, and you haven’t noticed. Whatever.

I entered 2010 with optimism, something I rarely do, being an awesome realist. Once again, optimism has let me down, giving me the biggest heap of fail ever in the past 2 months. The weather has been terrible and school has been lame. Alas, March will be awesome, I have a good feeling about March. Why? I’m not too sure, incredibly enough we’ve only got 3 weeks left until a 2 week holiday, early easter ftw?

That was a weird tangent? For those who are proper Chris fans you’ll know my days as a ‘Uni Blogger’ are numbered, in a few weeks (hopefully), I’ll be leading a new website, the school magazine’s site. With potentially 11 other bloggers by my side, it should be awesome. Don’t fret, I’ll still be on theTechLife.

Many of you will know me as a pretty crazy guy and maybe you may wonder what I am thinking about (or maybe not) in this blog I am going to tell you about a Thursday morning in my eyes.  Monday morning I am woken from a lovely dream about Rangers actually wining a game of football in the champions league by my alarm, and roll out of my bed and head down the stairs for my breakfast which is usually something like porridge or Weetabix (because they apparently fill you till lunch ).  Then I head up for my morning shower usually see the mother or the brother on my way up to the shower and I will grunt at them because I don’t gain the power of speech till I’ve had my shower.  I stand in the shower for about 10 minuets before my mother will tell me to get out, and give me a little speech about how much water costs and how she will make me pay for it if I continue.  I will generally Lie and tell her I was only in the shower for two minuets then she will leave me alone to get ready for school.  As everyone who knows me well will know I care very little about what I wear getting ready for school generally involves grabbing the first items of clothing I can lay my hands then I head of to catch the bus.

I get to the bus stop and will say something weird to let everyone know I have arrived something like “nice crotch phill”. The bus will then arrive and I will then be silent and imagine my first pack of fruit gums as we head to school. As I arrive at school Chris and I will usually say “to the Vendorrrrrrrrr”  and head towards the vending machine for our first snacks of the day Chris will usually get a pack of sensations and I will get my usual pack of fruit gums.  Then I will head of to tutorial and think about how I had not have a pack of fruit gums for about a decade till I came to 6th form and now I have them every day.  Sometimes someone will say “Morning Glenn” as I head to my form room I will generally ignore these people, not on purpose I will just ignore then because I am usually deep in thought about what I should do at the gym that day or where I should go running that evening (if you are one of these people you may hit me if I don’t reply to you).

As I enter the form room I will look around for Olly Brown (because i don’t talk to anyone else in my form).  If he is there I will say “Olly you angry bird” or some other ipod app related greeting and go and sit next to him and talk about random stuff (usually ipod or chemistry related) till period 1.  If Olly is not in the form room I will go and sit by myself and ask myself why I never talk to anyone else in my form, before remembering I am good at making bad first impressions and then I head to my first lesson (Chemistry).

I take my seat next to my good friend Chris and think to myself  if i wasn’t sat next to Chris would I have dropped Chemistry.  Then Miss Briggs will usually ask questions to the class and I will gradually get more and more depressed as I realise I don’t know the answer to any of the questions.  I will then pray that Miss Briggs doesn’t ask me a question and as if by magic she will ask me a question  and I will get it wrong and then crack a joke about how bad I am at Chemistry and then I will take out my frustrations on Matty by making  jokes about how rich he is till break.  Then I will  hug Alfred and he never hugs me back and I always cry a little inside.  After my hug fail I will head to the canteen with Chris sometimes I will occasionally hear Ellie saying “quisss will you hold my folder it’s really heavy” Chris will never helps Ellie with her folder and I always wonder why and always come to the conclusion the folder is to heavy for him.

After buying another pack of Fruit Gums I head back to Chemistry and try to work out how many packs of fruit gums I will have eaten by the end of 6th form.  Then it’s time for my least favourite lesson of the week Mr Taylor’s period 3 Chemistry I will usually think to myself I should be in the army right now I can’t believe they rejected me for two years for having an inhaler for a cat allergy.  Mr Taylor as usual will pick on me to answer a question which I will get wrong and once again I will cry inside.

Then I head to the LRC for a bit of lunch time action, I will catch up on the news and every one around me will ask me why I only ever go on BBC news. I always answer I have nothing else to go on, and think to myself why do I always go on bbc news. Then I head of for my afternoon lessons.

I knew it was going to be a bad week as soon as the back seat of the bus started pumping out smoke, and the bus driver told us to make sure if it set on fire to come tell him (Scary stuff).  After just surviving the bus I headed to the vending machine for my first pack of fruit gums of the week.  Everyone knows the two best types of fruit gums are the black ones and the red ones, my pack of fruit gums didn’t have any red or black fruit gums FML.  The next fail of the day came in the shape of Mr Taylor’s Chemistry lesson which was a revision lesson for our test on Thursday, and as usual I got all my questions wrong that’s when it hit me it was going to be a very long week.

I came into school on the Wednesday (my day off) to revise chemistry (as I do every week) for my test the next day. Then at 4 o’clock it was good old parents evening lets just say I need to work harder despite spending my days off doing school work. Thursday I did two chemistry tests I am not going to tell you how they went, lets just say I thought about jumping off a bridge after the lesson.  Friday didn’t get any better  as I found out everyone was going to the cinemas on Friday and I had no money to go so once again I cried myself to sleep .

After annoying  my mother all Saturday she lent  me enough money to go to the cinema.  I was pretty surprised but I enjoyed the film (valentines day) so did everyone else except for a couple moody guys (GRIFF). So Saturday turned out good and Sunday turned out perfect.  All week I had been Psyched for the Old Firm (RANGERS v celtic) after waking up at 11 I had a quick shower and a full English I loaded up my computer and started to watch a live stream of the Rangers match.  Good old Rangers won after scoring with 45 seconds left on the clock I was very happy as a ran round the house yelling “GLASGOW RANGERS” at the top of my voice.  Then it was time for the Carling cup final which United won,  this put a perfect end to my lazy Sunday.

I know none of you actually cared about what I have just typed so now it is time for my Guy and Villain of the week.

My Guy of the week is Maurice Edu for scoring the winning (and only) goal in the Old Firm

O also guys I’m in love!

This is Bungie’s 5th Halo game, Halo Wars being developed by 343 Industries. It’s also Bungie’s final farewell to the Halo Universe which is being passed over to 343 after Reach.

The Game

Set before the events of Halo 1, the story follows 6 Spartan soldiers ‘The Noble 6′ on the planet ‘Reach’, which for those already fans of the series will know that this planet is full of human’s and eventually gets destroyed, so, this isn’t exactly going to be the happiest Halo ever. Bungie have confirmed Master Chief won’t be featuring in the game, but with another 6 Spartans, who’s to complain?

The largest change from Halo 3 to Reach is the updated graphics, for example, pick any character from Halo 3 and the number of polygons in that character will be less than the amount of polygons in Reach’s battle rifle. For you and me that means the level of detail here is a vast improvement of previous Halo games. The engine from Halo 3 has been entirely altered and upgraded for Reach, one stand out feature is that of the AIs. While before 40 AIs was the maximum (including allies) Reach allows 60 (not including allies) this should translate to much more epic battles on a larger scale.

Bungie have stated the game is much more similar to ODST rather than Halo 3, using a health pack system rather than recharging shields a similar night vision view will also feature on the game. The game will also no longer feature the stick grenades and flame grenades from Halo 3. However, we’re promised new vehicles and new weapons, so the removal of a couple grenades really doesn’t disappoint me.

Multiplayer

Details on the multiplayer have so far been rather vague, it’s been said that the features you loved about the previous games will be back and better than ever. An invitation to the Beta is included in Halo 3: ODST, one which comes available on My 3rd, the features are said to be similar to Halo 3’s beta, with a couple of maps with returning gametypes and new ones. The weapons in the beta will also be limited.

Halo Reach Multiplayer Map – “Powerhouse”

A somewhat upgraded feature will be in Reach, that of upgrades. However, these won’t work like MW2 ‘perks’ but instead will just be aesthetic alterations you can make to your Spartan, either online or through the campaign.

Conclusion

Like the Halo series or not, you can’t deny it’s a successful one. This looks to be a perfect swan song for Bungie, who have already started on new ‘non halo’ projects. ODST was disappointing for many, but this is shaping up to be epic. Another pointless money spinner? Or a strong candidate for Game of the Year? I’d be inclined to go with the latter.

10# Tim Henman
At number 10 is every one’s favourite failure Tim Henman.  Tim never did manage to win Wimbledon all though he reached the semi finals a few times, and came agonisingly close to the final he just couldn’t manage to get his hands on the trophy.  If he did win he would have been on the biggest sporting wins of the last decade but it was not meant to be and  he is number 10 on my list.

9# Zinedine Zidane

Picture the scene you are in the world cup final you are captaining your country in your final ever match

and some Italian insults your mum what would you do Zidane? would you:
A: Ignore him
B: Knut him
What’s that Zidane you would do what?  You would do B, you idiot.  That’s what he did he Knuted the defender got sent off and France lost on penalties.

There are two ways to look at this it is either the best way to end your career or the worst (i Personally think it is awesome).

8# New England Patriots in the 2008 Super bowl
I understand some of you may not know what this is (it is American football) and has to be up here because it was one of the biggest upsets in sporting history. The New England Patriots were about to make history by being the first team to go unbeaten for a whole season in the history of the NFL.  All they had to do was beat the New York Giants.  Every single expert said the giants wouldn’t only lose but would be destroyed by the Patriots. It was a surprise that the Giants even got to the super bowl.  The Giants upset the odds thought  and instead of the Patriots going into the history books for one of the greatest sporting achievements ever they got into the history books for one of the greatest sporting fails ever and the only reason this is number 8 and not number 1 is that not enough of you actually care about the NFL.

I Promise not to have any more American football fails on the list because i know none of you care now onto number 7 (England fans i would advise you to look away now this next one is Embarrassing.)

7# England losing 1-0 to N.Ireland in the 2006 world cup qualification round.

England came to Belfast needing only one point to qualify for the world cup finals in Germany and having already defeated Northern Ireland 4-0 earlier in the campaign it was fair to say England were confident.  Northern Ireland couldn’t qualify for the world cup and were only playing for pride and they threw up one of the greatest moments in Northern Irelands footballing history when David Healy scored 10 minuets from time putting Sven and England under the microscope again. England did still qualify for the world cup but this was an embarrassing moment for English football.

The best thing about this is the manager didn’t even celebrate he obviously knows it’s just another England fail.

6# Czech republic being knocked out of the first round of world cup 2006.

It doesn’t seem like a big deal now because the Czech Republic are not very good at the moment but in 2006 they were ranked second in the world.  they were technically the best team in there group which was made up of Italy, the USA and Ghana should have been an easy group for the worlds second best team but it wasn’t and after an easy 3-0 win against the USA the Czechs lost 2-0 to Italy and 2-0 to Ghana needless to say they weren’t second in the world once the world cup had finished.

there were no pictures to illustrate this fail so on to number 5.

5# Massa when he Hamilton won the F1 world championship

Ferrari’s Felipe Massa needed to come 1st and for McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton to finish below 5th to win the Drivers Championship. Massa did win the final race and it looked like Hamilton was going to come 6th when Ferrari told Massa he had won the Drivers Championship. As Massa started celebrating Hamilton overtook Glock to finish in 5th winning the Drivers Championship. (Massa was not pleased when he found out.)

4# Leeds United

At the start of the decade Leeds were one of England’s top teams and the pride of Yorkshire they even  played and lost Valencia in a champions league semi-final and from then on things got bad they lost all there money got relegated twice and lost 2 playoff finals. Leeds united are one of England’s biggest footballing fail’s of the last decade and some may say they should be higher on my list but they did survive administration (just) and managed to still reach the league one playoff final in 2007/08 season when they had a 15 point deduction at the start of the year which is pretty impressive.

3# Thierry Henry’s Handball against Republic of Ireland
Pretty much everyone knows about this Thierry Henry set up France’s goal against Ireland with his hand and now everyone inn Ireland wants to kill him. There was even a reported case that Irish fans attacked a Henry’s hovers store.  Henry’s Wikipedia page also had to be locked due to constant vandalism.

2# France Being knocked out of World cup 2002 in the first round
France entered the 2002 World cup Strong favourites after winning the 98 world cup and the 2000 European championship.  But in 2002 France got Eliminated in the first round of the cup without a single win or goal. France’s results:

France 0 Uruguay 0
Denmark 2 France 0
France’s defeat to Senegal was one of the biggest surprises in world cup history.

1# England not qualifying for the 2008 European Championship
I will openly admit i cried when this happened.  England failed to qualify for Euro 2008 by finishing 3rd in there qualifying group behind Russia and Croatia. England’s results in the group are shown below:

The two results which stand out for me the most are the Draw to Israel and the Home draw against Macedonia.  Both results were pretty embarrassing for England mainly because Israel have only ever qualified for 1 world cup and never won a world cup game they have also never qualified for a European championship.  Although the Draw against Macedonia at home was by far the biggest fail of the campaign who had never qualified for a world cup or European championship.

After England’s Defeat to Croatia in the final game of the campaign England manager (at the time) Steve McLaren was named the Wally with the brolly by the Daily Mail.

Blog raped? Really?

Well, on with the show, you’re in for a lovely little Classic Blog. It’s been like forever since I last did one.

So I hear you cry ‘How’s Life Chris? It’s been ages since we last talked’ Yes, yes it has, let’s catch up.

I’ll start off as way back as I can, throwing you into 2009 New Year, which in my case, was an epic fail, being the ever positive guy I am, I didn’t take it as a bad start to a year but a bad end to the last, I’m optimistic of 2010. After messing around for months, me and the guys decided to finally get going with 24 Day Two Finale, if any of you missed it here it is:

Once more, it’s a heap of fail, but this time round it’s the last one.

Anyway, I’ve also got myself involved in the School Magazine ‘Voice’, which perhaps even more exciting for you guys will make me a blogger on a new site, but that’s not all, I’ll be alongside 11 other guys, 1 of them blogging frequently. Serious ‘hurrah’ right there. I’ll let you know how it all goes, fingers crossed for even more lovely Chris action.

Time to tell the story of how I killed a mouse, yesterday.
During an epic little session on ‘Mass Effect 2′ My mum called me from downstairs “Mouse!” usually this meant the cat had brought in a dead mouse and I had to clear it up, I was fine with that of course. “It’s still alive” Hmm, probably being slightly naive I expected the cat to be mauling it in the middle of the room. I glanced down at her bed, fast asleep, what the hell?! “It’s behind there” Mother said, arming herself with a book, I did the same. The Mouse had put itself in the corner behind our telly, which mean we couldn’t get a clear shot on it. The thing was tiny, and extremely fast. After a few attempts we had to try a new method. Just like the films, I grabbed some bait, a nut. Yeah that didn’t work. We pondered for a minute or so, Fly Spray?

Why Fly Spray you ask? Well, it can kill flies and let’s face it if you were sprayed in the eyes with it, you’re not going to be impressed. I decided, after a phone-call to Dad that a Hammer would come in handy too. We both took either side of the telly, Mum with ‘RAID’ and me with a hammer, spray, bash, spray, bash. Still no look, it made a run for it. Speeding to the other side of the room and getting underneath some draws. This had finally caught the attention of the cat who then started ‘pawing’ the corners, with all 3 of though it still managed to get away diving under the sofa.

Damn. This made things near impossible, we have a pile of washing next to the sofa, and we can only get to the sofa from the front. The mouse by this point was probably under the clothes, Me, Mother and the Cat didn’t have a clue. We then decided to take the clothes out one by one, thus eventually reaching the mouse or at least forcing it out. My mum let out a yelp the mouse falling out a shirt and going straight back down the pile. We sprayed and hammered a little more, then decided to go back to scavenging, we eventually reached the bottom layer, it had to be underneath this. I saw it slide underneath a t-shirt then slowing down, “I see it!”. “Hit it”, I did exactly that, “Hit it again!” So I did so, several times “If you’re under there, you’re dead now!” Just to make sure, I bashed around the rest of the clothes.

I lifted up the t-shirt, wow that’s disgusting. Mashed Vermin.
What’s that you say? You’re sympathising with the mouse? Seriously, that thing took two hours to kill and made me oh so sweaty, I have no sympathy for the thing, and nor should you.

Chris’ Guide #8: 6th Form

We’re the big kids now, like for real.
- Vending Machine: The beacon of hope also has the power to depress you. You’ll come up to the Canteen in the morning and see a packet of Walker’s Sennys (Sensations) and you’ll say to yourself ‘I’ll enjoy those at dinner’. Dinner comes round, and something tragic has happened. A5 is empty. What evil being could take my packet of crisps? That’s why you need to be clever, buy them when you see them, don’t mess around, it’s a dog eat dog world, got the money? Buy two. Loaded? Buy three. Actually, please don’t.

- The Common Room: Honestly, why would you want to spend time in there? For Work? Impossible. To Socialise? Don’t take the piss, you’ve just spent 30 minutes in the canteen you don’t need to socialise. Honestly, I’d consider my lessons to be socialising too, as lame as that may sound.

- The ‘Stat’ Wall:  Step 1: Ignore it. Step 2: Well, that’s it really. I seriously find it pretty ridiculous, I currently stand at 91st, which is fair, top half I guess. But when I see people that are insanely under their targets or over it, then maybe that isn’t the student. When someone is predicted straight Cs then brings out As, that clearly isn’t the student being a sudden genius, but the system is bad.

- The LRC: Want to play games in the LRC? YEAH SURE YOU DO!? Go home. Meh, what annoys me even more is being kicked out for people in cover lessons, what’s with that? Nay Cool.

Err yeah, I don’t really have any. Some of you will glad to know I’ve started writing new Useless scripts, here’s hoping. I’ll try to get some videos out over the holidays, or at least a blog or two.

What is it?

DoodleJump is a 59p/99c app from the Apple Appstore, for iPhones and iPod Touches. It involves tilting the iPod to direct a “Doodler” onto blocks. The aim is to get as high as possible. Most players get pathetic scores around 20,000. Pros like myself and my friends get 90,000+ and sad gamers get 2,000,000. (See here)

Although it sounds rather futile, it gets incredibly addictive. Seeing as I’ve clocked up more than 10 hours on this game, I can tell you from personal experience. It is hard to put it down.

About the game:

Throughout the game you get different obstacles in your way.

• Monsters – End the game if you jump into them, takes one shot to kill
• Black holes – Must be avoided, ends game if fallen into
• UFOs – Must be shot once, ends game if fallen into
• Bosses – Killed by shooting more than once, or by jumping on them

You can kill monsters with one shot (by tapping the screen) this fires a bullet and kills the monster. UFOs take one shot, bosses take more. And Black holes have to be avoided!

As well as the crazily fast moving platforms (in blue, and at higher scores), the brown platforms which crumble (can’t say I’ve ever been fooled into thinking it was green though..) and just being under pressure into landing on a platform after each jump.

Platforms:

• Green – standard unmoving platform
• Brown – Crack when landed on
• Grey – Moving platform (Up and Down)
• Grey – Can be moved by dragging on touch screen
• White – Disappear after one jump
• Blue – Moving platform (get faster higher up)
• Yellow – Turn too red after a short while, then blow up and disappear.

The game isn’t easy, and it certainly brings on a sweat when you start progressing to higher scores. It gets increasingly annoying when you have spent the past 7minutes getting to 80,000 and then to miss a platform whilst daydreaming. Easily done, my mind is always drifting off to better places…

Along the way you can get Power Ups…

• Spring – 352 points
• Trampoline – 520 points
• Helicopter Hat – 1736 points
• Spring Shoes – 2068 points
• Rocket – 3306 points
• Shield – Protects you from monsters for a short while

You can pause the game only 3 times (to make it fair). They certainly come in handy when you need to wipe down your iPod after excessive sweating. I wouldn’t be surprised if my iPod died from water damage.

Price:

59p/99c, not bad for an app. Would have been nice to have seen it going for free, but 59p/99c isn’t exactly a bank buster. Considering I’ve had more playing time on this than I have for Call of Duty MW2, I consider it a good buy..

Simple, but stylish in a pleasant fashion. (I’m trying here!)

Controls

- “Smooth like a babies bottom” as Chris would say. They don’t get much simpler than this.

Tap the screen to shoot enemies, drag moving platforms using touch screen. Tilt to direct doodler.

Lifespan

Although it seems like a game which gets boring after a while, it being repetitive in all. But I do believe it has one of the longest lifespan of the apps I have on my iPod. Mainly because of how fun and addictive the game is. It’s also nice to see updates frequently, with different scenarios:

Would be nice to see online and offline multiplayer. Fingers crossed!
