How to Jailbreak your iPhone/iPod Touch to Version 3.1.2
This guide will teach you how to Jailbreak your iPhone (Any generation) or the 1st/2nd Generation of the iPod Touch, to the firmware 3.1.2. I’ll be Using my 8GB iTouch 2G. Is your iPhone/iTouch already jailbroken? That’s fine, just follow the steps as usual. Also, make sure your iTunes is fully up to date, many steps wont work otherwise.
1) Firstly you need to check what software your currently running on, if you’re on 2.2.1 (or earlier) go onto step two, if you’re on 3.0 step three or if you’re already on 3.1.2 jump right to step four.
2) By having this version, you’re probably going to have a harder time then everyone else. But don’t worry, you can still make it. You actually have two choices at this point, either upgrade through iTunes at a cost (it’s a small one too, probably worth it, saves a bit of hassle). To upgrade through iTunes, simply click the ‘upgrade’ button when you’ve connect your iPhone/iTouch to your computer, you’ll then purchase the upgrade prompting the download. This should take you straight to version 3.1.2 so for you guys, hop on over too STEPWILLY. For those who want to skip every single cost, you’re going to need to do a separate jailbreak surpassing the 3.x cost barrier. With it being a separate jailbreak you’re going to need another guide/programme, try this one: (Here) That’ll take you to 3.0, thus the next step, I’ve followed that guide before, and it does work rather well.
3) With the 3.0 software on your iPhone/iTouch (Jailbroken or otherwise) upgrading to the next software couldn’t be easier, simply click the upgrade button on iTunes to get your ipod/iphone to 3.1.2, the download did take quite a while though.
4) Jailbreaking was a pain just 6 months ago, but now its much easier. Simply download the application ‘blackra1n’ from Here. Boot it up, making sure your iPhone/iTouch is connected to your computer, click the ‘make it ra1n’ button and let it work its magic, it’ll only take 2 minutes. Now, that’s it, wait for your iPhone or iPod Touch to restart and you’re done, a jailbroken pod. There’s more too it though…
Jailbroken.. now what?
5) Boot up the blackra1n app which should now be on your iPhone’s menu. You then get the option to download either Cydia, Icy or Rock, I’d choose Cydia, its what it’ll be using for the rest of the steps.
6) With Cydia now on your homepage, boot that up. You’ll probably have some updates to download, so get those. For your ticket to free apps you’re going to need ‘Installous’. First click Manage then choose sources, you’re going to need to add a new one by pressing ‘Edit’ then ‘Add’ at the top of the screen. Then add the source ‘http://cydia.hackulo.us’
7) With that source added click on it and Install the app ‘Installous’. After that the rest is fairly self explanatory, boot it up and browse the apps, any other queries, let me know.
FAQs (Updated)
Q. What should I do if I want to ‘un-jailbreak’ my iPod?
A. Simple really, plug it into iTunes and click ‘restore’ though this will remove all your files, it removes any traces of a jailbreak. Also when the next firmware update comes out, upgrading to that will remove your jailbreak and keep all your files.
Q. Does this void your warranty?
Yes, but only when its actually jailbroken will Apple know. Simply removing the jailbreak will make the warranty perfectly intact. Apple probably wouldn’t be so fond on fixing an iPhone that’s jailbroken.
Q. Do I keep all my files when I remove the jailbreak?
You should do, any apps you got through Installous will disappear. However, mine stuck this time round, lucky I guess, constantly ‘Transfering Purchases’ will help, also backing up your iPod seems to help.
Q. Can you do it for me?
No, I mean I can do it, but I’m not going to. It would make things so much easier to just use the iTunes your iPod is already synced to.
Q. When I jailbreak, what files are kept?
Everything
Thanks for reading, hope all went well.
